La Casa Invisible is a citizen managed social center in Málaga (Spain), located in a historical building in the city center. It started in 2007 when a group of citizens, neighbors and creators entered this building, which belongs to the municipality. It was abandoned despite being an important construction related to the social and cultural heritage of the city.

Back then, the objectives were clear:

* fostering self organization process, strengthen social networks and movements working for social justice;

* creating a laboratory for experimental culture in where the main characters were local creators and the main criteria was collaborative production, cooperation and free culture;

* nurturing knowledge transfer in different disciplines (social sciences, politics, technology, arts and creation…) to stimulate critical thinking, citizen empowerment, social creativity and collective action;

* experimenting commons oriented models of managing cultural and social infrastructures, fostering radical democratic practices, equality, direct participation, citizen empowerment and cooperative design of public policies.

legal framework

In 2011, the municipality signed a contract where they showed the compromise of following up a process which would finish with a cession agreement. The struggle to make it happen is still on going. In December 2014, the day before Christmas, the City Council threatened to evict the house and ordered closing it. The claim would be supported in security conditions of the building.
In response to that, the La Invisible’ community organized demonstrations and launched a crowdfunding campaign with the aim of setting fire proof doors – one of the requirements of the City Council. That movement made the case gain international visibility and large national relevance.
Since then, open activities are allowed in the patio and only internal activities for members are allowed inside the house. The agreement s still pending.
Read (in Spanish) the manifesto where La Casa Invisible claims responsibility on the City Council for a permanent cession of the building.
